What better way to spend a workday, than to be outside, playing bocce ball? Matchstick did just that on a Friday afternoon, when a quaint park in the middle of Little Italy played host to our second annual bocce ball tournament. It was an afternoon full of tasty snacks, laughter and of course, some good old fashioned competition.
The office was split into five teams of two, each with their own unique strategy in approaching the game. Despite everyone’s professional demeanour within the Matchstick walls, each team quickly proved they were there for one reason, and one reason only – to win.
As the afternoon wore on, Matchstick played before a growing number of spectators. Local bocce ball enthusiasts hung around the courts, patiently waiting their turn. They seemed bewildered at our sudden appearance on their courts and asked why they had never seen us there before. We assured our new friends we would only be there for the afternoon, and the courts would be theirs again until next year.
Matchstick learnt that some of these locals have been coming to the park for the past 25 years to play bocce. In fact, many of them only know each other from their time spent in the park. They meet there to get their daily bocce fix, and then carry on with their routine until they reconvene the next day.
We probably could have learned a thing or two about bocce from these vets, but luckily no one challenged us. Our spectators seemed more content helping us mediate our games and gesturing as to whether or not our throws were up to their standards.
At the end of the day, when all of our scores were tallied up, Ashley and Foujan took the crown as winners of this year’s tournament. The Matchstick crew ended the day in true Italian style, with some gelato on College St. and parted ways for the weekend.
Now that is my definition of an ideal workday.
